Program Description:

Completion of the two to three year postdoctoral program will prepare fellows to become successful laboratory directors in clinical chemistry. The training program is structured so that the trainees gain:

  • An academic understanding of the field of clinical chemistry, including preparation for board certification. Both chemical and clinical aspects of laboratory medicine are emphasized.
  • Practical experience handling technical, financial, personnel, and public relations matters in a full-service laboratory; chemistry sections include general and special chemistry, clinical toxicology, endocrine testing, and trace elements.
  • Expertise and techniques required to formulate and conduct research and development activities in clinical chemistry. The trainee will select, plan, conduct, and report on at least two research projects during the training period.
  • Administrative, educational and management skills required for dealing effectively with laboratory personnel, administration, and physicians utilizing the laboratory services.
  • Knowledge of how laboratory activities can be coordinated with other disciplines within the hospital to accomplish the common goal of optimum patient care.
  • Appreciation of the necessary balance between clinical and laboratory aspects of medicine through close correlation of the postdoctoral and pathology resident training programs.
