Applicants to the Program must meet one of the following criteria:
a. Applicant must be US or Canadian Citizen or hold permanent residency status in USA.
b. Graduates of an LCME accredited medical school.
c. Graduates of an accredited Osteopathic College with 1 year of prior training (i.e., rotating internship); or whatever else it may be that Os- teopathic Board requires.
d. Graduates of an LCME accredited medical school or accredited Osteo-pathic College, and have completed accredited pathology or non- pathology residency program in US.
e. Graduates with doctoral degree in life sciences or chemistry related field from accredited doctoral program. Applicants must have satisfactorily completed a minimum of 30 semester hours (or equivalent) in undergraduate and/or graduate level chemistry or biochemistry courses taken at institutions acceptable to the Board.
All applications must contain the following: Application form with associated three letters of reference, personal statement, CV, USMLE Scores for medical applicants, transcripts and copy of diploma for doctoral candidates. Applications will be reviewed by the Program Coordinator for completeness. The Fellowship Director will evaluate and select candidates to be invited for an interview.
Applicants are selected for interview based on medical school performance, letters of recommendation, college transcripts, USMLE scores for applicants with medical degree and personal statement. Can-didates will be notified by letter or e-mail that they have been invited for an interview. All candidates will interview with the Fellowship Director, faculty members, Chair of the Pathology Department, as arranged by t he Program Coordinator. Candidates will be evaluated on content of their application materials (see above) and overall interview evaluations.
The principal objective of this training at the postdoctoral level is to prepare a clinical chemistry trainee with sufficient clinical and practical experience to be an assistant/associate director or director of a clinical labora-tory. Scott & White Healthcare is a major health care provider comprising of five large, medium and small sized hospital in central Texas. It is academically affiliated to Texas A & M Health Science Center thus providing both academic and clinical environment during the two year training. The clinical training may occur at any of the following sites:
i) Scott & White Memorial Hospital (650 bed Tertiary academic medical center).
ii) Scott & White – Brenham (60 bed Acute Care Hospital)
iii) Metroplex Health System (233 bed multi-campus tertiary Care facility)
iv) Scott & White Children Hospital (64 bed opening in Fall 2011)
v) Scott & White – Round Rock (76 bed Hospital in Round Rock, TX)
Each of these hospitals have independent clinical chemistry laboratory with a wide array of clinical chemistry and immunoassay analyzers. The professional direction of the clinical laboratory is provided by the faculty of the Department of Pathology at Scott & White Memorial Hospital. Both the professional and technical staff providing the training is employed by Scott & White Memorial, however the professional staffs are also aca-demically affiliated to College of Medicine at Texas A & M Health Science Center.
The division of Clinical Pathology is one of the three subdivisions of Department of Pathology. It includes the areas of Clinical Chemistry, hematopathology / hematology, blood bank and transfusion medicine, microbiology, immunology, specimen receiving and processing. The molecular diagnostic training occurs in division of molecular pathology which is a part of anatomic pathology.
Depending on post doctoral fellows interest research training specifically in the area of targeted tissue pro-teomics, QTOF, triple quad and ion trap LC tandem mass spectrometry can be arranged as a rotation in the division of investigative pathology which is one the three subdivisions of Department of Pathology. Fellows interested in Health Informatics will also have opportunities to work on numerous on-going laboratory infor-matics related projects in Pathology Informatic Center within Department of Pathology.
The clinical chemistry fellowship program is the second subspecialty program in clinical pathology, the other being the formal fellowship program in hematopathology / hematology.
