The program mission is to train individuals with a PhD in analytical chemistry, biochemistry or related field or a MD with interests in clinical biochemistry for a career in academic clinical chemistry that includes service, teaching and research. The minimum period of the fellowship is two years; however three years is more common.
Upon completing the fellowship, individuals will be proficient in the clinical utilization and interpretation of laboratory tests, be knowledgeable in the latest research applications of clinical biochemistry and have experience in education and management related to laboratory medicine.. It is the goal of the program that each trainee will rotate through all sections of the laboratory at either Children's Hospital, Boston or the adjacent Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, attend weekly clinical pathology lectures, seminars, participate in endocrine and toxicology rounds and attend didactic sessions with faculty. Trainees will participate in teaching medical technologists, medical students and hospital staff. They will be expected to conduct a research project and present data at national meetings. The experience will provide the opportunity to gain bench experience in the laboratory and provide consultationto laboratory technical staff, nurses, residents and hospital medical staff. |
