Program Description:
The Cleveland Clinic is a comprehensive academic medical center. There are more than 1,000 licensed beds on the main campus. There are also 8 full service hospitals in the great Cleveland area: Euclid Hospital (371), Fairview Hospital (478), Hillcrest Hospital (424), Huron Hospital (211), South Pointe Hospital (232), Lakewood Hospital (400), Lutheran Hospital (204), Marymount Hospital (322). In addition, there are 34 family health centers across the area. A stand-alone medical school (Lerner College of Medicine) associated with Case Western Reserve University is based on the main campus. Furthermore, the research institute of Cleveland Clinic is adjacent to the Laboratory Medicine facility. A medical technology school is also in place within the institute.
The training program is based primarily on main campus but may involve any other hospitals as needed. The professional direction of the clinical laboratories is provided by the faculty of the Department of Clinical Pathology within the Institute of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine. This is a dedicated 2-year training program in the Section of Clinical Biochemistry within the Clinical Pathology Department. Fellows that are admitted will work and learn in a clinical biochemistry laboratory setting. There are three specialty laboratories – automation, special chemistry, and immunopathology. The fellows will also rotate through the Molecular Pathology Lab and the Inherited Diseases Laboratory. They also will have the opportunity of learning other specialties if the need arises. The fellows will learn through five major routes – self study, staff members, residents and other fellows, medical technologists, and interaction with clinicians. The fellows will also participate in education for staff, residents and fellows, medical technologists, and medical technology students. There will be plenty opportunities for method development and translational research during the two-year training.
